I-Search ... We Find: Appreciating communication challenges and developing multimedia solutions through teamwork
Shawn Apostel, Michigan Technological University
Created for a sophomore level general education composition/communication class, this three part project begins with an individually written preliminary research paper read to and graded by the class. Students then display flyers to encourage other students to join their research teams. These two projects are stepping stones to the final project, when they form groups and orally/visually present their arguments to a general audience who learn about these presentations via advertisements the groups create.
Since each part of the project focuses on engaging the audience (keeping their attention and predicting what would persuade them), students are encouraged to use whatever formats they feel would create a captivating message. Interestingly enough, every group so far has created a multimedia presentation, with many using self-made movie clips incorporated into PowerPoint presentations. The project I will feature includes a short research study video created by students with no prior experience, just the desire to persuade their audience. Since they used a program I am not familiar with, which is often the case, I ended up being one of many people in a community of learners who provided input to students utilizing various forms of multimedia composition.
Products:
1. A preliminary research paper (.doc and .doc grading rubric)
2. A visually based research proposal
3. A 25 minute multimedia presentation (.doc grading rubric)
